on the road

Music touring

I tour with music when the opportunity matches where I am in life. My first tour was with Alanis Morissette and the Barenaked Ladies in 2004 — an excellent summer where their songs swirled through my head as I slept on the bus rolling down the highways. Here I was traveling with with The Dead and Company, seen my “Front of House” camera position.

up close and personal

On the road, we mind our own business but interact with the performers if they show interest. The Dead and Company were excellent clients. I went onstage and shot Mickey Hart with his “Beam” from inches away. The colors and optics were amazing. So much imagery to play with and show.. it was a great Summer!

venues with history

Every stop carries its own personality and character. Sometimes I revisit important places — like Antelope Valley in Wisconsin, where Stevie Ray Vaughan passed. I found myself drawn into mindfulness during the build. That day, I sat at lunch on the deck, my eyes often drifting toward ‘The Hill.’ There are no “answers”… just silence and reflection. Local stagehands have “stories” as well.

Working “handheld”, going onstage or shooting from the pit is an amazing and creative experience. We interact with the fans, gently peek laser lights over guitarist’s shoulders, “dutch the camera” and even get spit on by out of control rockers. All in a 16 hour day’s work! Not true.. we chill from 3 or so until showtime : )
